About this tool

Gemskills Converter is a free, browser-based checker for people moving their Gemini Gems to Skills before Google shuts Gems down on November 17, 2026.

Everything runs locally in your browser. The text you paste is processed by JavaScript on your own device. Nothing is uploaded to a server, logged, or shared with anyone. That matters if the Gem instructions you are checking contain commercial or confidential material.

Why this exists

Google announced that Gems will be discontinued for personal accounts on November 17, 2026, and that new Gems cannot be created or edited after October 13, 2026. The official migration path is a manual three-step process: download the files from your Gem, create a skill, paste the content back in.

That process is straightforward. What made it worth building a tool for was everything the official documentation does not make obvious:

  1. Migrated Gems arrive as disabled drafts. They do not activate automatically. Each one has to be enabled by hand, which is easy to miss until you open the list on November 18 and find everything greyed out.
  2. Five capabilities do not carry over. Canvas, Deep Research, video generation, music generation, and Guided Learning are not supported by Skills.
  3. Gemini App skills and Workspace skills do not sync. If you use both surfaces, the same skill has to be created twice.
  4. A mismatched folder name fails silently. If the name in the frontmatter does not match the parent directory, the skill uploads, appears in the list, and never fires. There is no error message anywhere.
  5. Pre-built Google Labs Gems have no conversion path. They are switched off entirely and have to be rewritten from their instructions.

Each of those was found by reading the documentation and then testing against it, not from a single announcement. This tool exists to check for them before the deadline rather than after.

What it does and does not do

It doesIt does not
Generates a compliant SKILL.md from Gem instructions you paste in Convert anything on Google's servers — that migration is automatic and free
Validates an existing SKILL.md against the published spec Upload files to Gemini, Workspace, or any third-party service
Flags the rules that cause silent upload failures Store, log, or transmit anything you paste
Explains what each rule means and how to fix it Guarantee that Google will not change the format again

Who it is for

Anyone with a personal Gemini account who created Gems and now has to move them. That includes people who used Gems for writing, research, data work, or as a packaged version of an existing prompt. You do not need to be a developer, and you do not need to understand YAML — the validator explains each rule in plain language.

How it is built

PartWhat it uses
PagesStatic HTML with one shared stylesheet
Conversion and validation logicA single JavaScript file, no framework, no build step
HostingCloudflare Workers with static assets, deployed from GitHub on every push
AnalyticsGoogle Analytics 4, loaded in your browser
Cost to youNothing. There is no account, no sign-up, and no paid tier

There are no external dependencies, no tracking scripts other than Google Analytics, and no third-party JavaScript served from another domain. The validator is about 400 lines of plain JavaScript and you can read it all in assets/validator.js.

Accuracy and limits

This tool is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by Google. SKILL.md and Gemini Skills are features of Google products. Google can change the format or the migration rules at any time.

The validation rules were written against Google's published documentation as of October 2026. If the format changes, this tool will be out of date. Treat the output as a checklist, not as an authority.

What the validator can tell you is that a file matches the rules as they were documented. It cannot tell you whether Google will change those rules, whether your particular Gem will behave identically after conversion, or whether a skill that passes validation will be useful. Those are different questions.
