Home › Are Skills free
No. As of October 2026, creating and using skills in an ordinary Gemini chat does not require a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription. That changed during the rollout, and plenty of guides still say otherwise. This page covers what is genuinely free, what still needs a plan, and the three requirements that have nothing to do with payment.
The short answer: skills are free on a personal Google account. The three conditions are that you are 18 or over, signed in with a personal account, and have Keep Activity switched on. None of them is about money.
Gemini Spark tasks and schedules are a different feature with a different rule, and that is where the subscription question still bites.
| Capability | Free personal account | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Create a skill in a chat or on the Skills page | Yes | Write it yourself, use a template, or let Gemini draft it |
| Upload a SKILL.md or folder | Yes | Web app and the Mac app. Not on Chromebook |
| Call a skill with / or @ | Yes | The shortcut is moving from / to @ |
| Let Gemini apply a skill automatically | Yes | Driven by the name and description |
| Stack several skills in one chat | Yes | Combining a writing-style skill with a brand-guidelines skill is Google's own example |
| 100 active skills at once | Yes | Create as many as you like, enable 100 |
| Skills in Workspace apps | No | Needs an eligible Workspace edition such as Business Starter, Standard or Plus, Enterprise Standard or Plus, Google AI Pro for Education, or AI Expanded Access |
| Gemini Spark tasks and schedules | No | These need a subscription that includes Spark |
The distinction that causes confusion: skills in a normal chat are free. Spark tasks and schedules are a separate product with a separate subscription rule. "Skills are free" does not mean "everything Gemini does is free".
They were not wrong when they were written. Skills originally launched inside Gemini Spark, which sits behind a paid tier, and the requirement stayed in place for several weeks after the feature began rolling out into ordinary chats.
| When | What was true |
|---|---|
| Early rollout, September 2026 | Skills lived in Gemini Spark. A Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription was required |
| October 9, 2026 | The requirement was removed. Skills in regular chat became available to free personal accounts |
| From October 13, 2026 | Skills began rolling out to Workspace accounts |
If a guide tells you skills cost money, check its date. A guide written in late September is out of date on this specific point, and it is often the only point where it is wrong.
These are the conditions people actually hit. Each one produces a confusing symptom rather than a clear error message.
Gems could be created by personal account holders from age 13. Skills require 18. Google has not explained what happens to Gems owned by users between those ages, and support for under-18 users is described as coming later.
Silent failure — If a student account was used to build Gems, those Gems convert, but the account may not be able to use the resulting skills. There is no documented transition for the gap.
Work and school accounts were not in the first wave. That is a rollout detail, not a permanent limit, and it is the reason a skill can be missing from one surface and present in another.
This is the requirement that surprises people, because it trades privacy for the feature.
| Keep Activity | What happens |
|---|---|
| On | Gemini saves your conversation history, remembers which skills you created, and can suggest them. Skills work. |
| Off | Gemini runs without memory between sessions. It will not reliably remember your skills or suggest them. |
Gems never required Keep Activity. Skills do. A user who deliberately turned it off for privacy reasons is trading a slice of privacy for the feature. That is a real decision, and the setting is worth understanding before you turn it back on. Google's Gemini privacy documentation covers what activity retention means.
Nothing about whether you can create or use a skill. The subscription affects capability and limits, not access.
| What changes | Effect |
|---|---|
| Model quality and compute | Higher tiers get stronger models and Deep Think reasoning. Free accounts run on lighter models, so the same skill produces different output quality |
| Reference file processing | Paid tiers handle larger file volumes and longer context |
| Spark tasks and schedules | These need a subscription that includes Spark |
| Skills themselves | No difference. The 100 active limit and the 100 MB cap are the same |
That last row is the one worth internalising. Your skill's behaviour does not change when you upgrade. If a skill produces a weak result on a free account, upgrading will not fix the instructions. The description and the body are what determine the output.
If you are on a work or school account, the question is not "free or paid" but "which edition".
| Account | Skills in Workspace apps | Gems end |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Google account | Not applicable | November 17, 2026 |
| Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit | Needs an eligible edition or add-on | March 2027 |
| Workspace education | Needs an eligible edition or add-on | June 2027 |
Admins control this. A user cannot grant themselves access, and a skill that works in the Gemini app will not appear in Workspace apps unless an administrator has enabled it there. The Workspace page covers that split in detail.
Two limits apply on every tier, paid or free:
| Limit | Value | What happens at the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Active skills | 100 at a time | Disable one to enable another. The app does not delete the disabled one |
| Total upload size | 100 MB across all files | Large reference libraries hit this |
Neither is a subscription matter. A large paid account hits the same 100 MB wall as a free one.
No. As of October 9, 2026, creating and using skills in an ordinary Gemini chat is available on a free personal Google account. Pro and Ultra are only required for Spark tasks and schedules, and for Workspace apps that need an eligible edition.
For most personal use, yes. The limits are 100 active skills and 100 MB. The real difference is model quality, which affects output quality, not whether a skill runs.
Yes, and nothing changes about it. The skill is the same file either way. Upgrading gives you a better model, not a better skill.
Check three things in order: that you are on a personal account rather than a work or school one, that you are 18 or over, and that Keep Activity is on. The rollout is also gradual, so some accounts have not received the feature yet.
It changes what Gemini retains, so it is a genuine trade rather than a checkbox. Google documents what activity retention means in the Gemini privacy documentation. The practical point is that Gems never required it and skills do, so users who kept it off for a reason should understand what they are turning on.
For personal accounts, yes. A converted skill is not a premium feature. Workspace accounts are the ones that need an eligible edition.
Yes. Automatic conversion is not a backup, and it does not cover the capabilities that do not convert. The backup checklist takes about ten minutes per Gem.
The facts on this page were checked against these on October 22, 2026.
Google changes these rules as the rollout continues. If a detail here looks wrong, the about page lists where it came from, and the contact page is the way to report it.
